A few years ago, I had a long telephone conversation
with Marjorie M. Thorp, (then in her eighties), one of the illustrators of The News Chronicle Boys' and Girls'
Book no. 5. She told me that when she was a young woman, she worked for her father, (also a commercial artist), whose studio
was opposite the offices of the publishers George Newnes. She used to take his work across to them, and it was thus that she
got to know them. They liked her work also, and she became one of the regular artists of Sunny Stories magazine.
She was paid the princely sum of 2/6 (12p) for an in-text picture and 15s. (75p) for a cover. A tiny amount one might think,
but that rate of remuneration was, she assured me, enough for her to make quite a reasonable living.
