School stories have always been popular with children - especially girls, and Enid Blyton takes her place among the best in the genre - luminaries such as Elinor M. Brent-Dyer, Angela Brazil and Dorita Fairlie-Bruce.

The Naughtiest Girl series is centered on Whyteleafe School, a sort of liberalist co-ed paradise where pupils make their own rules, mete out their own punishments and share all their cash equally. One peevish little minx, not content with all this, decides to be as undisciplined as she can. The name of this ungrateful creature is Elizabeth Allen. But you might guess that she comes round in the end. (Now why didn't my parents send me to a school like that? On second thoughts, I think I know the answer).

The fifth in the series from 1945

W. Lindsay Cable was a very talented artist who worked for a number of years for Punch magazine. At one time during the 1940s, he was in correspondence with Enid Blyton concerning a joint venture to produce a Nursery Milestones Calendar, (baby's first tooth, first words, etc. etc.), but for one reason or another, a publisher could not be found to take on the project. That must have been a rare, if not unique occasion in Enid's career.

N.B. There may be some confusion over who illustrated which books, since some dustwrappers show the illustrators of St. Clare's and Malory Towers the wrong way round. The information above, however is correct.
