The Mystery series ran more or less parallel with the Famous Five series, but was not nearly as popular. The children in these books are known as the "Find-outers", and are Larry, Daisy, Pip, Bets and Frederick Algernon Trotteville, aka "Fatty". These prodigies specialise in putting one over the local bobby, the intellectually challenged P. C. Goon, (how politically incorrect can you get?).

 

I often think that the world of children's book illustrators is, or at least was, in times past, a small one. J. Abbey, for instance, also illustrated works by Capt. W. E. Johns, (Biggles) and Frank Richards, (of Billy Bunter fame), Treyer Evans worked on Angela Brazil books, and Lilian Buchanan illustrated Four and Twenty Blackbirds (1959), by Malcolm Saville.

All the books were published by Methuen and illustrated by J. Abbey to 1949, Treyer Evans from 1950 to 1954 and thereafter by Lilian Buchanan.
